Fair Food in Fairfield County Schools

Advocates for a sustainable school food environment

Amy, I was given your name by Dan Levinson (sp?) and Rebecca Howe of Westport CT. I work with John Dodig, principal at Staples HS on the Senior Internship Program. I was attaching our brochure for your information; however, I kept getting an upload error...maybe the file was too big.

Last year we placed 50 students in various locations around FFC. This year the applicants more than doubled and there was quite an interest in two of our opportunities: Millstone Farm and CitySeed in New Haven. Millstone Farm backed out as an opportunity before we had finished accepting applications because the owner had 2 Wilton students she wanted to use. I have over 8 kids applying to the CitySeed internship and my contact there had initially only requested 1 student. We place students for a 4 week unpaid stint from May 18-June 12; they are required to work at least 25 hours; are completely finished with school on May 16; and students skills/interests are matched with the opportunities and are carefully screened. Are you aware of any "green," "horticultural," "farm-related" opportunities I should be investigating in the area. I would hate to turn these students away. I do have nursery's and the like; however, the farm and CitySeed are really quite different and would love to place the students in where their passions lie. I would be most appreciative for any leads. Maybe the school gardens could work?
Please let me know what you think.
Best,
Joyce Eldh
