Fair Food in Fairfield County Schools

Advocates for a sustainable school food environment

I watched the screening of Two Angry Moms early this year at Weston Intermediate school. I was struck by how easy it was to educate parents on nutrition, and how schools offering simple healthy choices made it easier for children to choose a healthier option.

I've always maintained that children should learn by example, and one of the efforts we have made for our family is to join a CSA. We visit the farmers market every week and leave with a bounty of vegetables, most of which our children have chosen from all the options available. My older daughter who just turned 8 would always pick snap peas and blue potatoes. My 10 year old son would go for the squash. My just turned 4 year old, would love to choose the tomatoes, fresh picked from the vine that morning. Giving your children the opportunity to hand select their food is one of the best first steps to improving their choices.

Our public schools have done well in upgrading their food system, but have a LONG way to go. There are still pizza or burgers available every day, but there is unlimited salad bar and vegetable sides (excluding potatoes).

Progress......!!
